Bollman Tech, other schools to see work kick off, continue during vacation

Empty schools are a welcome sight for general contractors itching to get a jump start on Summer 2019 bond work.

So spring break in Adams 12 Five Star Schools came at a perfect time for a handful of schools where contractors have a laundry list of construction tasks to accomplish over the next several months.

Bollman Technical Education Center: The first phase of a multi-year, $12 million renovation to the school began with demolition work in the school's automotive instruction area. The work will extend beyond spring break into the remainder of the school year and summer as automotive and diesel technology students take up temporary residence at the Five Star District's Support Services Center. This will allow contractors to complete the renovation work on the updated auto shop for the 2019-20 school year. The new shop will not only provide students a better learning space but also immerse them in an industry-modeled auto shop layout that will better prepare them to pursue automotive technology careers. Work is also expected to begin, prior to the end of the school year, on installation of a new heating and air conditioning system for the school.

Thornton High School: A large amount of outdoor work and some interior work already began at Thornton High School in February. That work continued over spring break and demolition also began on the school's current kitchen. Contractors spent March building a temporary school kitchen to pave the way for the demolition work, part of a planned full renovation of the kitchen as well as cafeteria. The completion of that work - for the 2019-20 school year, will allow for Thornton High School to join the National School Lunch Program.

Coyote Ridge Elementary: Work will take place over spring break on the installation of a new fire alarm control panel system. Additional work will take place over the summer including replacing of the school's storefront windows; improvements to art and music classrooms; HVAC improvements and some flooring replacement. The school will also receive a new secured-entry vestibule.

McElwain Elementary: Concrete repair/replacement work to improve safety and ADA-accessibility.

International School @ Thornton Middle: Concrete repair/replacement work to improve safety and ADA-accessibility.
