Enclosing new wing as winter nears becomes key priority

In construction projects, time is always of the essence with progress routinely measured in incremental timelines of days, months and, in some cases, years.

For the ongoing STEM Lab project, there are deadlines looming both near and far. On the not-too-distant horizon is the fact that it is now roughly nine months until the completed Northglenn magnet school is expected to welcome students to a completely renovated campus. And, while that ultimate deadline drives all other progress, it is a more pressing seasonal mandate that pushes construction work forward right now.

STEM Lab Construction Update - November 2018

The push is on to get the second of two 25,000-square-foot expansions added to the school as part of the project enclosed and associated site work done before the worst of cold, snowy season sets in.

To that end, workers made plenty of progress over the past month with even more anticipated in the coming weeks, weather permitting.

The biggest milestone was the completed installation of all structural steel - a process that began in late October. The L-shaped footprint for the addition on the west side of the building is now clearly visible. With the structure set, workers turned their attention in late November to the placement of roof joists and decking as well the pouring of the addition's concrete pad - key steps to enclosing the new area.

Curb and gutter work was also underway in November that will lead to the paving of new fire lanes and west parking lot - another accelerated process to avoid potential poor weather and provide better construction site access.

When the school's renovation and reconstruction is completed, it will allow enrollment to grow and provide more STEM-learning opportunities for students across the Five Star District. The expansion will add one more class at each grade level K-7. As a magnet school, families of interested students must apply through the Choice program. Choice for the 2019-2020 school year opens Dec. 1, 2018. The first round of Choice is NOT first come, first served.  All applications received between Dec. 1 and Jan. 31, 2019 are considered in the same lottery.
