Individual Career and Academic Plan

Adams 12 Five Star Schools recognizes the importance in creating meaningful and valuable curriculum for all students. School counselors provide opportunities for students to explore careers and college, strengthen academic skills and provide support for social and emotional development. The counseling curriculum aligns with state legislation, Colorado’s Individual Career & Academic Plan (ICAP Quality Indicators); and national school counseling standards developed by the American School Counseling Association.

ICAP is a personalized process that starts in sixth grade for every Five Star Schools student, and helps students imagine a future career and design a way to get there. When students take the initiative to complete a meaningful ICAP, they find out which pathways fit their learning styles and their unique talents, which careers ignite their imagination, and what kind of training and academic experiences will prepare them for in demand jobs when they graduate high school and/or college.

ICAP gives students ownership of a process that helps them explore their unique talents and aspirations, participate in career and postsecondary options, and create pathways to financial success after high school.

The ICAP may include:

  • Career and college interest surveys

  • Postsecondary and workforce goals, benchmarks, and data reflecting progress toward those goals

  • Advanced Learning Plans (GT students)

  • A transcript showing academic progress and assessment scores

  • Experiences in service learning and/or work environments

  • Activities that establish connections between school-based instruction and the world of work

  • An intentional sequence of courses that reflect progress toward the postsecondary goal

  • College application(s), a resume, or alternative work-based applications

  • An understanding of the financial impact of life after high school, including an education.

Five Star students build their ICAP using resources at school and in the community.

Naviance is an online postsecondary and career exploration program provided to all 6th-12th grade Adams 12 students. Naviance holds ICAP information and provides a students’ team the opportunity to view their four year plan, goals, and postsecondary exploration. Log in to Naviance, by searching for your school here.
