Frequently Asked Questions

For School Year 2023-2024 Students may be able attend preschool if they are 3 years old by their first day of school, and if they turn 5 after Oct. 1, 2023. Students that turn 5 years old on or before October 1, 2023 will not be eligible for preschool (instead, they would enroll in kindergarten).

Based on a new Adams 12 Calendar and the new Universal Preschool Program being implemented, preschool schedules have changed.

The specific hours at each preschool site vary based on the school’s hours and the Preschool program model. Preschool hours for each preschool site can be found on the school's website.

At this time, Adams 12 is researching a tuition based option for 2023-2024. UPK implementation is guiding the decision about a tuition based option.

Starting in the 2023-2024 school year:

• ALL 4-year-olds qualify for 15 hours of free preschool a week the year before they start kindergarten. These students must turn 4 by Oct. 1, 2023.

• Some 4-year-olds who meet additional eligibility requirements may qualify for additional hours of free preschool. This includes:

  • Children who live in low-income households (270% of the 2023 Federal Poverty Guidelines)

  • Children who are dual language learners, and the native language spoken in the child’s home is a language other than English, or children whose native language is not English

  • Children with an Individualized Education Program (IEP)

  • Children who are currently in a foster care home or in non-certified kinship care

  • Children who are identified as homeless

• Some 3-year-olds qualify 12.5 hours of free preschool per week if they meet certain eligibility requirements, such as:

  • Children who live in low-income households (270% of the 2023 Federal Poverty Guidelines)

  • Children who are dual language learners, and the native language spoken in the child’s home is a language other than English, or children whose native language is not English

  • Children with an Individualized Education Program (IEP)

  • Children who are currently in a foster care home or in non-certified kinship care

  • Children who are identified as homeless

If you have concerns about your preschool-age child’s development, you can have him/her screened through Child Find. If the free screening indicates your child is delayed in any of the developmental areas of the screening, they may be referred to our Child Find Evaluation Team for a more comprehensive assessment. If your 3-5 year old child meets the criteria for receiving Special Education services, Child Find will work with you to place the child in the Early Childhood Education Program, where specialized services will be delivered.

Our Early Childhood Education Program will screen children from birth until a child reaches the kindergarten eligibility age.

If your child is under the age of three, the Child Find Evaluation Team will work with county agencies who will provide services for your child until they turn three and then will transition your child into the district preschool program if they still qualify.
