International (Foreign) Exchange Students

Updated on Tue, 03/08/2022 - 8:00am

February 7, 2022 UPDATE: Adams 12 will be hosting foreign exchange students for the 2022-2023 school year.  We strongly encourage international exchange students to be vaccinated against COVID-19.  The student application deadline is February 28, 2022.  Schools that do not fill their allotment of 4 exchange students by the end of February will remain open through April 15.

Adams 12 Five Star Schools values having international exchange students in our high schools.  Each year a limited number of foreign exchange students (4) are accepted at each of our five traditional high schools.

Adams 12 Five Star Schools can only accept students sponsored by foreign exchange agencies who have J1 student visas.  Adams 12 Five Star Schools is not designated to issue I-20 forms and therefore cannot accept privately sponsored students on F1 visas.

The district’s role in the international student exchange process is to approve exchange agencies. Once an agency is approved they remain on our list of approved agencies until there is cause to revoke their approval. The district reserves the right to revoke an agency's approval for any reason including placing students that are not proficient in English, failure to provide adequate support to students and host families and failure to communicate to students and host families. The application window for new agencies is September 1 to October 15.

Once an agency is approved, they can contact foreign exchange counselors at our high schools to discuss placement of students. It is preferable that a foreign exchange student attend the school that serves the host family’s home. It is also preferable that a host family have one or more children attending the same school the exchange student will attend. The application window for exchange students begins January 1 and closes February 28 with notification no later than the week of Spring Break.
