Why would a delayed start be announced?

A delayed start may be announced if temporary adverse weather conditions exist in the morning, including but not limited to high winds, cold temperatures or unfavorable road conditions for morning rush hour.

Delayed starts maximize instructional time with students rather than closing for the entire day; and give the city and district staff additional time to clear roads, sidewalks and parking lots to ensure the safety of the Five Star community.

What if even after the two hour delay I don’t feel it’s safe to take my child to school?

If schools are open but a parent feels, based on personal circumstances, that conditions pose a safety concern for their child getting to or from school they can call the school for an excused absence.

When will my child’s bus pick them up in the morning?

Morning bus pick-up will add two hours to the normal pick-up. For example, if you child’s bus normally picks them up at the bus stop at 7:25 a.m., on a delayed start the bus will pick them up at 9:25 a.m.

Afternoon bus drop-off times will not be adjusted.

Will my child in kindergarten have school?

Morning and afternoon half-day kindergarten will be canceled; Full-day kindergarten will start two hours after normal time.

Will my preschooler have school?

No. Preschool will be canceled districtwide.

Will morning BASE be available?

Yes. Families with students in morning BASE will add two hours to the normal start of the program. For example, if on a normal day morning BASE starts at 6:30 a.m., on a delayed start morning BASE will start at 8:30 a.m.

Afternoon BASE will not be adjusted

If my school participates in the breakfast program, will breakfast be available?

Yes. Normal school meal(s) will be available at all schools. Meal times will be adjusted based on the delayed start schedule.

If your school participates in the breakfast program, breakfast will be available in the cafeteria before 10 a.m. Middle schools will only serve lunch as students will not arrive until after 10 a.m.

Will extracurricular activities during the day be affected?

Activities and field trips during the school day that require transportation will be canceled; After-school activities will be decided by the school.
