Federal Accountability

Federal accountability has been primarily governed by the Elementary and Secondary Education Law and, as of December 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). To learn more about federal accountability please visit the Colorado Department of Education website.

State Accountability

The Education Accountability Act of 2009 (SB 09-163) authorizes the Colorado Department of Education to conduct an annual review of the performance of public schools and districts in the state and to make recommendations to the State Board of Education concerning the type of school improvement plan to be implemented in each school and the accreditation category for each district.

As part of the state accountability process, each school must have a School Accountability Committee (SAC).  More information about composition, responsibilities, and best practices of the SAC can be found in the SAC Handbook.

District and School Performance Frameworks

The district and school performance frameworks provide a snapshot of the district or school's level of attainment on academic achievement, growth, growth gaps and postsecondary readiness.

Unified Improvement Plan (UIP)

As defined by the Colorado Department of Education, the purpose of unified improvement planning is to ensure all students exit the K-12 education system ready for post-secondary education, and/or to be successful in the workforce, earning a living wage immediately upon graduation. A UIP provides information on the district’s data trends, root causes, and performance targets, as well as identifies strategies and resources the district will use to improve student academic outcomes.

For school-specific UIPs, please see the Colorado Department of Education’s website

UIP Summary

The Board of Education and the District Accountability Committee worked together to make the Unified Improvement Plan more user-friendly to district parents. Read the UIP Summary below.
