Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar) levels, either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin or both. Persons with consistently high blood sugars will typically experience frequent urination; they will also become increasingly thirsty and hungry. There are three major types of Diabetes:
  • Type 1 Diabetes: The body does not produce insulin.

  • Type 2 Diabetes: The body does not produce enough insulin, nor do the body’s cells respond properly to the insulin.

  • Gestational Diabetes: Affects women during pregnancy.

School Considerations for Students with Diabetes

Students with Diabetes will likely require some type of medical intervention during the school day, whether that be glucose monitoring, calculating carbohydrates, administering insulin, checking for ketones, or administration of emergency medication. Annually updated health care provider orders will be required along with a school health care plan and all supplies. Arrangements for school field trips will need to be planned in advance. For additional questions or information contact your School Nurse.
