District closes performance gap with the state
For the second straight year, student achievement has made strong gains in the Five Star District. To start the school year, the district celebrates significant growth in student performance on statewide assessments in English language arts, math and science. The recent release of achievement scores further closes the performance gap between Adams 12 Five Star Schools and the state.
Dramatic increases in literacy seen across the district
This is the second consecutive year that the Five Star District saw significant gains on CMAS PARCC assessments in English language arts (ELA) across the board. Since 2015, it’s estimated that an additional 1,050 Five Star students in grades three through nine are meeting and exceeding the state average in ELA assessments. (Estimate is based on an average of 3,000 students per grade level tested.)
Improvement was substantial compared to the 2016 results. The percentage of students meeting and exceeding state expectations increased in six of seven grade levels from 2016 to 2017.

Third grade: 6.3 percent improvement (compared to .3 improvement in 2016)
Fourth grade: 2.7 percent improvement (compared to 3.8 improvement in 2016)
Fifth grade: 6.0 percent improvement (compared to 1.2 improvement in 2016)
Sixth grade: 6.4 percent improvement (compared to .8 decline in 2016)
Seventh grade: 6.8 percent improvement (compared to .7 improvement in 2016)
Eighth grade: 2.6 percent improvement (compared to .3 decline in 2016)
Ninth grade: 2.7 percent decline (within 1.7 percent of the state average)
At the state level, changes of three percent are generally considered significant; in the Five Star District we saw four grade levels far exceed that percentage in ELA. Across all grade levels, the district’s average ELA results are now within 1.1 percent of the state; significantly closing the gap between the district and the state, and signifying a positive trend of growth at all levels.
Improving literacy instruction has been a district focus for the past four years and the recent results demonstrate that the hard work of Five Star students, staff and families is moving the district in the right direction. These results demonstrate that the district’s focus on literacy is positively impacting student achievement.
Closing the gap between the Five Star District and the state
With 2010 data as our measuring stick, we’ve moved from a district where student achievement significantly lagged the state across the board to a district where student achievement paces or outperforms the state in 10 of the 14 assessments in math and English language arts (ELA).
In 2010, the district saw results below the state average in all 24 grade level assessments across reading, writing and math. Fast forward to 2017 and the district sees students, on average, outperforming the state in math and closing the gap to 1.1 percent meeting or exceeding the state in ELA.
Two student populations, minority students and English Language Learners, outperformed the state in both ELA and math for the second straight year.
In the fourth year for the CMAS science assessment, the district saw the percentage of students meeting and exceeding expectations increase in all grade levels tested - grades five, eight and eleven.
Growth remains strong in English language arts and math assessments.
Adams 12 Five Star Schools is one of two of the largest districts in the state to show growth of 53 or above in both English language arts and math. The only other district to show growth above 53 in both is Denver Public Schools.
Now in the third year of the CMAS PARCC statewide assessments in English language arts (ELA) and math, the district saw growth performance meeting or exceeding the state’s performance in 54 of 58 categories. The 58 categories represent subgroups within the district, i.e. grade level, English Language Learners, Free and Reduced Lunch, gender, minority, etc.
The state’s median growth percentile (MGP) for ELA and math is 50 percentile points for all grade levels except eighth grade math which is 51.
Notable gains across grade levels in MGP from 2016 to 2017:
Fourth grade: improved by 4 percentile points (from 59 in 2016 to 63 in 2017)
Sixth grade: improved by 4 percentile points (from 58 in 2016 to 62 in 2017)
Eighth grade: improved by 3 percentile points (from 55 in 2016 to 58 in 2017)
English language arts
Fourth grade: improved by 4.5 percentile points (from 52 in 2016 to 56.5 in 2017)
Sixth grade: improved by 5 percentile points (from 45 in 2016 to 50 in 2017)
Seventh grade: improved by 4 percentile points (from 52 in 2016 to 56 in 2017)
Eighth grade: improved by 5 percentile points (from 52 in 2016 to 57 in 2017)
