Charter school application received
Community meeting for charter school presentation scheduled for Jan. 10
On August 31, 2017 Adams 12 Five Star Schools received a charter school application for district authorization of the New America School.
A special board meeting is scheduled for January 10, 2018 for the charter school initial presentation to the Adams 12 Five Star Schools Board of Education and community, with a follow up session on January 17, 2018. This will give the Board adequate time to gather all pertinenet information prior to taking action.
The charter application process is a lengthy process that involves our citizen committee from the District Accountability Committee (DAC). The team volunteers their time to review and score the application based on the rubric provided by the Colorado Department of Education. In addition, the DAC, along with Five Star staff, will conduct a site visit, write a summary of their findings and submit their report to the Board. Multiple staff members will also review the application and submit a separate report to the board. This process requires dozens of manpower hours in reading and scoring highly technical text, and we are so grateful that we have community members who are willing to devote the time and energy to this task.
The New America School – Thornton Campus opened in 2005. It enrolls more than 400 students each year in a location convenient for students in Adams and Denver counties, as well as other communities in metropolitan Denver. They have unique opportunities for young parents, former drop outs, and students working full-time to earn high school credits and a diploma. The Thornton Campus is located at 8978 Washington Street in Thornton.
