Dear Five Star Community,

In Adams 12 Five Star Schools, our vision is to create a safe learning environment that is caring and inclusive so all students thrive in our rapidly changing world. Five Star Schools is fortunate to serve an incredibly diverse student body. To fulfill our vision, we must elevate the needs of each of our children.

While we have been engaging in diversity and equity work on an ongoing basis, we recognize there is much more work to be done in this space in service to all students and staff in the Five Star District. To that end, the district is seeking a partner to perform an equity audit of our district with a focus on race. This partner will provide guidance, expertise and facilitation of a districtwide assessment of the experiences, treatment, access to opportunities and overall achievement results for students, families and staff of color.

Background

An Equity Leadership Team composed of staff in various roles and of different backgrounds drafted the scope of work for this audit. The team then revised the scope of work to reflect feedback from various stakeholder groups. These stakeholder groups included parents, community members, students and staff. The focus groups with parents were held in both English and Spanish.

While we acknowledge there are many areas of equity that can and should be monitored, reviewed and continuously improved, including but not limited to gender identity, sexual orientation, and individuals with disabilities, the focus of this audit is equity related to race. As we focus our efforts on this area of equity, the lessons learned and successful practices can and will be applied to other areas as a long-term commitment to ongoing equity work in Five Star Schools.

Next Steps and Opportunity to Participate

Adams 12 Five Star Schools is currently conducting a process to identify the best partner to perform this equity audit and help us create and implement a plan as we move towards an equity framework. We would like to invite our community to provide feedback on the finalists on from 6 - 8 p.m., Monday, June 7. This community night will be virtual and hosted via Zoom. The finalists will have an opportunity to present to the community and answer questions that have been submitted ahead of time.

If you are interested in attending and providing your feedback, please RSVP using this form by noon on Friday, May 28, 2021. You will receive an email Friday, June 4 with a Zoom link.

Please note that this is the first of what we hope to be multiple opportunities to engage in this work. If you are unable to attend this community night, but would like to be put on a list to be informed of future opportunities, please fill out this form.

This extremely important work takes all of us. Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to build a more caring and inclusive district for our community in every school, every day.

Sincerely,

Chris Gdowski
