Celebrating Women’s History Month in Adams 12

Celebrating Women’s History Month in Adams 12

Seventy-five years ago, Adams 12 Five Star Schools - previously called Adams County School District 12 - was a small, growing rural district. At the time, much of our community was farmland, and new neighborhoods in Thornton and Northglenn were just beginning to take shape. Schools were opening quickly to keep pace with families moving north of Denver. Behind every one of those classrooms was a dedicated educator helping build something brand new.

In those early years, education looked very different. At Eastlake Elementary, students read books that featured Dick, Jane and Spot, fire drills meant sliding down metal escape tubes, and on the last day of school some children rode their horses to class. Through it all, women were a steady presence in classrooms and school offices — teaching, organizing, supporting and encouraging students as our district found its footing.

As the Five Star District grew — from just a handful of schools to serving tens of thousands of students across 62 square miles — opportunities for women in education expanded, too. Over the decades, women stepped into leadership roles, guided innovation, strengthened programs and helped navigate times of rapid growth and economic challenges.

Today, women lead and serve at every level of Adams 12 Five Star Schools. They are classroom teachers, principals, bus drivers, counselors, nutrition staff, district leaders, school board members and community partners.

As we mark our 75th anniversary, we celebrate not only how far our district has come — but the generations of women who helped carry us here.

Here’s to the past and to the women who continue to help elevate student success.
