How to know when weather will impact school

Weather impacts to schools are communicated in multiple ways

Challenging weather conditions can come at any time and Adams 12 Five Star Schools uses a variety of resources to determine if conditions exist that will impact schools.

The district closely monitors weather reports and road conditions and makes a decision regarding school on a daily basis between the following three options:

  1. All schools/offices are Open: All schools will operate on a normal schedule despite weather. If schools are open but a parent feels, based on personal circumstances, that conditions pose a safety concern for their child getting to or from school they can call the school for an excused absence.

  2. All schools/offices are operating on a 1-hour delayed start: In the event of an announced 1-hour delayed start, all schools will start one hour after the normal start time. For more details on the new 1-hour delayed start option, visit adams12.org/delayedstart.

  3. All schools/offices are Closed: All schools will be closed. All scheduled activities in the school building are canceled, and sports events and practices are postponed.

If it's been determined that all schools will be closed or operating on a 1-hour delay, we will make every effort to announce a decision by 5:30 a.m. Given how quickly weather conditions can change in Colorado, decisions are not typically made the night before.

Any impact to school due to weather will be communicated in the following ways:

  • District’s website at adams12.org

  • School websites

  • Email and text message to parents/guardians

    • In order to receive text messages, opt-in today by texting “YES” to 67587

  • District’s hotline (720) 972-4000

  • Social media, including Facebook (/adams12fivestarschools) and Twitter (@adams12)

  • Local media outlets

Keep in mind, parents will only receive alerts if schools are closed or operating on a 1-hour delay. If schools are open and operating on a normal schedule, there will not be an alert.
