Shaping Our Identity: The History Behind the Five Star Name

Shaping Our Identity: The History Behind the Five Star Name
School District No. 12 Adams County

Our modern story begins in July 1950, when voters gathered for the district’s very first Board of Education meeting. In a landmark decision, they consolidated several smaller rural districts into one, forming what became Adams County School District 12. From 1950 to 1970, the population in the area increased 400 percent and Adams County School District 12 was no longer a true representation of the community we serve.

In 1989, community members and district leaders came together with a shared goal: to create an identity that represented all five communities served by the district. The Board of Education adopted the Five Star Schools concept after a committee recommended a new logo depicting the number twelve in a field of five stars signifying a shared commitment to excellence across the district’s schools. The Board officially incorporated the new logo into district stationery, signage and vehicles, marking a defining moment in our visual identity.

Although the new name and logo were embraced, it was never officially changed which led to confusion internally and externally. In 2004, the Board of Education formally adopted Adams 12 Five Star Schools as the district’s official name. This change helped eliminate inconsistencies and ensured that the name recognized locally was also recognized by the State of Colorado. Just as importantly, it reaffirmed that our district proudly serves five unique communities, not just the two, Northglenn and Thornton, often referenced in state listings. At this time, the district also adopted the logo that we still use to this day.

Today, the Five Star name and logo remain powerful symbols of who we are and what we value. As we honor 75 years of growth and achievement, our logo continues to represent a district committed to excellence- past, present and future.
