Tips for supporting learning at home

Tips for supporting learning at home

As we settle into the new school year, supporting your child's learning at home remains a vital part of their success. Here are some helpful tips to support learning at home and encourage good habits.

  • Have Your Child Teach You: Give your child opportunities to teach you about what they are learning. It is a great way to discover if they really understand something and gives them an opportunity to be the expert.
  • Create a Dedicated Learning Space: Designate a specific area in your home for schoolwork. This dedicated space helps children mentally transition into "school mode" and minimizes distractions. Ensure the area is well-lit, comfortable, and equipped with all the necessary technology and school supplies. Keeping the space organized can also help your child stay focused and on task.
  • Balance Screen Time with Offline Activities: While technology is a vital learning tool, it's crucial to balance screen time with offline activities. Encourage your child to take regular breaks from their devices to stretch, go outside, or engage in hands-on activities.
  • Common Area: Encourage your child to use their devices in common areas, like the living room or kitchen. This practice allows for easier monitoring and reduces the temptation to stray from educational tasks.  No technology tool can block all inappropriate web content.
  • Encourage Reading: Promote literacy by reading to your child and by reading yourself. Helping your child become a reader is the single most important thing that you can do to help the child to succeed in school. Reading helps children in all school subjects. More importantly, it is the key to lifelong learning.
  • Promote a "Tech-Free" Bedroom: Create a designated charging station in a common area of your home where all devices are to be charged overnight. It removes the temptation for late-night scrolling or gaming and promotes better sleep, which is especially true for older students. It also guarantees that devices will be fully charged and ready for a day of learning.
  • Foster Open Communication with Teachers: Stay in regular contact with your child's teachers to stay informed about their progress. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions. A strong parent-teacher partnership is key to a successful at-home learning experience.
  • Be a Tech-Savvy Role Model: Children learn by observing their parents. Demonstrate healthy technology habits by managing your own screen time, being mindful of your online presence, and engaging with technology in a positive and productive way. Your example can have a lasting impact on how your child navigates the digital world.
