Hawks alumni return to The Nest for monumental game

On January 13th, the Horizon Girls Basketball team welcomed back and celebrated the 30 year anniversary of the 1993 6A Girls Basketball State Championship team. 8 of the 13 players on the roster were in attendance including Head Coach Greg Hahn and assistants Don Hamai and Dawn Gaffin.

Current Horizon Girls Basketball Coach Dan Doehler organized the event and added that “The tradition and history of Horizon Girls basketball is second to none. It is my duty as a former hawk and as the current head coach to honor all of the people for all of the things they’ve done for this program”.

The Horizon Girls Basketball program has been a force in this state since opening its doors back in 1989. The program has won a CHSAA record 22 league championships, been to 10 Final Fours, State Runner up 3 times and has qualified for the state tournament for 34 consecutive seasons. Coach Doehler hoped that by honoring the past, his current squad would take the lessons about the teamwork exhibited by the 1993 team to heart and maintain the connections and friendships being built right now on the basketball court. He called the level of collaboration necessary for success on the court “a gift.

Doehler expressed gratitude to all players and family members in attendance.

“There’s just so many great memories. Seeing the coaches and all the players back together, and just celebrating what they accomplished one more time was truly amazing."
