Teacher’s Fulbright Experience in Morocco will inspire students

This summer, a Northglenn High School teacher — Kelly Milbourn Lamsal — participated in a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad Seminar Grant in Morocco.

During the program, Kelly, alongside eight faculty members from MSU Denver and two teachers from Denver Center for International Studies (DCIS), explored topics related to nature, traditional and modern water conservation technologies, renewable energy, and green hydrogen initiatives. These included solar panels in Ouarzazate, a wind power plant near Tangier, and innovative fog harvesting systems.

Participants also examined Morocco’s ongoing water crisis, which has persisted for the past seven years. They learned about the country’s proactive efforts to build desalination plants along the coast to provide clean water for both personal use and sustainable agriculture.

As part of the seminar, participants traveled extensively throughout Morocco, visiting cities and villages, engaging with local organizations working to improve community sustainability, exploring UNESCO World Heritage sites, and experiencing the vibrant culture of local medinas.

Kelly, a social studies teacher, plans to integrate Moroccan history and culture throughout her curriculum by embedding it into various units of study. She also intends to collaborate with STEM teachers and instructors from MSU Denver to create interdisciplinary connections.
