Latinos in Action, Leadership in Motion

Latinos in Action, Leadership in Motion

Every other Friday, a group of students from Northglenn Middle School board a school bus on their way to Leroy Elementary. Through the Latinos in Action (LIA) program, these students visit Leroy classrooms to mentor younger learners, helping with reading, writing and literacy skills while modeling leadership, confidence and connection.

Before stepping into classrooms, the middle school students complete extensive training focused on literacy strategies and leadership development. Once at Leroy, they become role models for students who eagerly await their arrival. Many of the mentors once attended Leroy themselves, creating meaningful moments as they reconnect with former teachers and inspire younger students who now see what opportunities await them at the next level.

For many Leroy students, the connection is even deeper. Because many LIA students are bilingual, they are often able to support elementary students in both English and Spanish, helping children feel seen, heard and understood.

“The students love seeing these guys because it’s like this big kid wants to come see me,” Northglenn teacher Tracey Portillo said.

The partnership extends beyond the classroom through family Lotería nights, field day events and school celebrations, strengthening connections not just between students, but between schools, families and the broader community.

Latinos in Action is just one example of how our Hispanic community explores and leads while building a sense of belonging for all in the Five Star District. Our district is happy to celebrate and support our diverse community as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Sept 15-Oct 15. Read the Board of Education Proclamation.
