Mountain Range sets standard with unique team

In 2019, Mountain Range High School created the first eSports team in the district. As soon as the program began, they filled all our open spots. Then COVID swept through the country and shut them down only a couple months into their first season. The team returned in the 2020/2021 school year and competed from home. They found a way to keep an after school activity going while others were shut down. For many of the players, it was a great experience to keep connected to their teammates and the school. When we came back to in-person learning, they once again filled all 24 spots and competed in two games; League of Legends and Rocket League.

This year, their League of Legends team, The MRHS Mustangs made it to the top ten in the state. This was also the first year they could award letters to our players for participation in our program. Overall, 6 players received their letters in eSports for their years of dedication and achievement. They hope to keep this program going strong and adding more games to compete in next year.

Our goal is to engage those students who might not be interested in traditional sports, but still crave competition, comradery, and a way to engage with their school community.

This story exemplifies our ELEVATE Focus Area: 21st Century Learners. Sharing stories of students who collaborate, think critically, problem-solve and are digitally literate to thrive in today’s ever-changing world.
