Native Youth Advocates visit Meridian Elementary

- Engage
Meridian's 4th grade team collaborated with the district's Equity and Excellence department to invite our Native Youth Advocate and some of our Indigenous students to come and speak to Meridian students about Native American/Indigenous history as part of 4th grade Social Studies standards. Students learned all about Lakota, Nuche (Ute), and Dine (Navajo) regalia, dances, family structures, beliefs, and customs. They also learned about the land on which Meridian was built and the Indigenous peoples who helped care for the land. Students walked away with an appreciation of Native American history and the current lived experiences of Native American students within our own community.
This story exemplifies our ELEVATE Focus Area: Diverse Learning. Sharing stories of how students receive engaging learning experiences and the focused-attention they need through appropriate student-to-staff ratios and varied programming.
