Students attend Latinas First Foundation event
- Empower
- Engage
Thornton High School has a long tradition of empowering our Latina students through partnership with the Latinas First Foundation. Since the opening of the Newcomer Center last year in 2023, we are expanding that tradition by connecting students from within the Newcomer Center and those in the larger THS population to this organization. On September 13, Kelsey Barnes (THS G/T Advocate and Academic Coordinator) and Rae Ann Armijo (Newcomer Center Counselor) took a group of accomplished Latina students to the annual Latinas First Lunch. The motto of this organization is "Girls Can Be What They Can See."
This statement rang especially true as a Lorena Vergara Gomez, a 2023 graduate of Thornton High and a previous student at the Newcomer Center was recognized for winning a scholarship to the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. We were thrilled that some of our current students with big dreams were able to meet a former student that is making her own big dream a reality.
