Thunder Vista empowers student in first volleyball game
- Collaborate
- Focus on Students
At Thunder Vista we have a wide range of diverse learners that flourish through the support of many stakeholders. One such 7th grade learner, Laila, is embarking on her middle school athletic journey and participated in her first volleyball game on January 16, 2025. Laila struggles with loud noises such as clapping, yelling, and whistle blowing, which occur frequently in a competitive game such as volleyball. She tried a few times to step out on the court, but found the noises overwhelming and quickly returned to the bench. Our head coach, Randy Vang, and scorekeeper (and music teacher) Brittany Tunget, spoke with the referee and the opposing team's players and coaches about Laila's sensitivities. EVERYONE quickly adjusted and supported Laila in a way that made her feel comfortable. The STEM Launch athletes, coaches and spectators quickly caught on and joined in the alternate ways to encourage this student, which included ASL applauding and snapping instead of clapping and yelling. With the support everyone provided, Laila was able to successfully play and score multiple points for her team including one ace and one kill! We are so proud to be a part of the Adams 12 family and this is a perfect example of what it means to ELEVATE our strengths. Thank you to all involved that made this such a successful experience!
