Westgate teacher named Civics Educator of the Year

Westgate Community School is proud to announce that high school teacher Daniella Parisi has been named the Colorado Civics Educator of the Year, a statewide honor recognizing exceptional commitment to civic learning, student engagement, and high-quality social studies instruction.

The award, presented annually by Civics for Colorado, honors educators who demonstrate outstanding leadership in teaching civics, government, and constitutional principles while empowering students to become informed, thoughtful, and active participants in their communities. Parisi was selected for her innovative classroom practices, her emphasis on student voice, and her ability to connect civic concepts to real-world issues in meaningful and accessible ways.

At Westgate, Parisi is known for designing rigorous, discussion-rich learning environments that encourage students to think critically, analyze diverse perspectives, and engage deeply with issues that matter to them. Her approach includes inquiry-based projects, simulations, community engagement opportunities, and collaborative problem-solving experiences—all rooted in the belief that every student can and should see themselves as a contributor to civic life.

“Daniella’s work embodies the very best of what civic education can be,” said school leadership. “She challenges students to ask bold questions, to lead with empathy, and to understand the power of their voices. Her passion for this work has created a learning environment where students feel valued, capable, and ready to participate meaningfully in their communities.”

Students say her classes have helped them understand the world beyond the textbook and have inspired them to be more present and proactive in issues impacting their school, community, and broader society.

Parisi’s recognition also shines a light on Westgate Community School’s commitment to whole-child education, student empowerment, and academically rigorous instruction. The school celebrates this award as a testament to the collaborative culture shared by staff, families, and learners.

Thanks to Daniella Parisi's networking efforts, Westgate Community School will also be hosting a Colorado Supreme Court Justice to speak with our high school students on December 19th. We are thrilled to offer this opportunity to our students.
