Supporting thriving schools during a period of declining enrollment

Across the country, school districts are seeing a trend of declining enrollment. Demographers point to several drivers: declining birth rates, high housing costs, and other factors reshaping school communities.

Adams 12 Five Star Schools isn’t immune to these trends

The district must evaluate the impact of declining enrollment on our ability to provide students with robust and meaningful learning opportunities.

12-year enrollment trend

To ensure thriving and fiscally responsible school environments for all, the district is evaluating school consolidations.

Our district is currently seeing the greatest impact across our elementary and middle schools

With decreased enrollment the district has unused space in schools.

Fewer students means fewer dollars and less staff, leading to tough decisions about reducing opportunities and supports for students

What happens if we don't adapt?

Families, students and staff will see:

  • Reduced access to learning opportunities for kids
  • Fewer dedicated full-time staff supporting students at one school
  • More part-time specials teachers, part-time assistant principals divided across multiple schools
  • Less staff to collaborate with to support student success
  • Growing inequities across schools
  • Underutilized buildings put continued financial strain on resources, adversely affecting programming for all students across all schools

Our Path Forward

Every student, staff member, and family deserves a school environment with access to opportunities that foster growth, success, and a strong sense of community.
