After school literacy and STEM education support for Title Schools
Since 2001, Adams 12 Five Star Schools has utilized federal 21st Century Community Learning Center funds awarded through a highly competitive process to build valuable programs that have served thousands of students from ten highly impacted schools. PEAK participants spend their after school time engaged in academic and enriching experiences that have a track record of allowing students to thrive, excel, and be joyful. PEAK aligns with district improvement strategies including, creating multiple pathways for student learning and building strong community partnerships.
The PEAK Learning Center offers invited students in grades 2-5 a comprehensive out-of-school time experience for approximately 15 hours each week. This program operates from 2:30pm-5:30pm M,T,TH and from 1:15pm-5:30pm on Wednesdays. Transportation home by district buses is available each program day. The hours at Federal Heights and Thornton Elementary School include a morning component and vary after school to accommodate the extended day. PEAK typically operates from 8:00am-12:00pm for 6-8 weeks during the summer months.
Each elementary site offers dynamic programming incorporating a mix of STEM activities, enrichment, recreation, and homework help. Vantage Point and Crossroads students are challenged to identify relevant opportunities for service and are immersed in career exploration and preparation. All nine elementary sites now utilize Engineering is Elementary kits to promote inquiry and hands-on learning. Staff strive to identify giftedness in traditionally under-represented populations using U-Stars units and TOPS Observations. Additional academic program components include; homework support, myON, Imagine Learning, and Learning Together. Finally, all PEAK Learning Center staff receive professional development in “The PEAK Way”, a paradigm shift that regards all students at-potential rather than at-risk. This strengths-based training also provides a roadmap for staff-to-student interactions that are culturally responsive and personalized to meet individual student need. Clear expectations are set for how we respond to misbehavior and develop the social-emotional skills of the students we serve.
